Enjoy the Summer with These 9 Fantastic Day Trip Ideas

Gone are the days when summer break meant several weeks off to do as you like. As a working adult juggling the many responsibilities on our hands, even the thought of having an entire week off to ourselves seems like a blissful wish at times. With that being said though, it’s important to remember that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and that means you’ll want to prioritize your well-being in order to truly be happy and healthy.

It can understandably be difficult to find the time (and enough of it!) to indulge in doing the things we love and spending time with others. However, even if you only have a limited amount of time to take a break, there’s still lots that you can do to relax and have fun. In fact, we’ve got some great summer day trip suggestions listed down here just for you:

Go on a Fantastic Camping Trip

Certain summer activities might take a little more time to plan and arrange, so if you’re looking for something you can put together on the same day itself, it’ll probably be an overnight camping trip. You’ll need a tent, a sleeping bag, and a backpack and you’re good to go. For food supplies, you can always stop by along the way to your camping grounds.

Suggestion: Beaver Pond Campground

Location: 700 Kanawauke Rd, Stony Point, NY 10980

Visit the Museum

Even though summer seems to suggest more outdoor activities, there’s nothing wrong with the idea of spending the day indoors. Museums are a great way to learn, explore and bask in cool air conditioning without feeling guilty. Admission is usually free or kept to a minimum, so it isn’t hard to imagine spending an entire day admiring all the displays.

Suggestion: American Museum of Natural History

Location: Central Park West at W. 79th Street, New York, New York 10024

Opening Hours: 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. (Daily)

Go on Mountain Hiking

You don’t need to be experienced to enjoy hiking, and most avid hikers once started off on beginner trails too. Just remember to wear a good pair of sturdy shoes and bring along a water bottle and maybe even some light snacks to munch on. If you’re uncertain about how you’ll fare on the hike, you can always ask someone more experienced to go along with you.

Suggestion: Cascade and Porter Mountains @ Lake Placid

Distance: 5.6 miles

Have Some Fun in the Sun

If there’s one season that makes the water look so inviting, it’ll be summer. Visiting a water park is a great way to cool off, and it’s also one of summer’s most inexpensive activities. Of course, you can definitely visit the beach, but you won’t have many water slides and other water amusements that can only be found in a water park.

Suggestion: Splish Splash Water Park

Location: 2549 Splish Splash Dr, Calverton, NY 11933

Enjoy a Summer Outdoor Concert

When it comes to attending a concert, summer is about the only time where outdoor concerts are popularly accepted. With such nice weather, it makes sense to hold more activities outside. This is a great time to pack your picnic basket, invite all your friends, and just get ready to enjoy the night with the performing artists on stage.

Suggestion: E-Zoo @ Randall’s Island

Location: Randall’s Island

Go to a Pick-Your-Own Farm

Although you can buy your produce and other necessary groceries from the supermarket or farmer’s market, there’s something satisfying and rewarding about eating produce picked by your own hands. In fact, it’s literally the scenario of being able to enjoy the fruit of your harvest, and it’s also a good activity for young children to enjoy and appreciate.

Suggestion: Prospect Hill Orchards

Location: 340 Milton Turnpike, Milton, NY 12547

Opening Hours: Do check the website for more info

Visit the Zoo

If you think there will be nothing for you to do or enjoy at the zoo, think again. This is still a popular summer activity, and although the crowd will consist mostly of families, you’ll be surprised at just how much there is to explore and how much you can learn about the many different types of animals we have on our planet. For those who prefer less of a crowd, you might want to pay a visit on weekdays instead.

Suggestion: Central Park Zoo

Location: 2300 Southern Boulevard Bronx, NY 10460

Opening Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Mon to Fri), 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Weekends & Holidays)

Read a Book at the Local Library

These days, libraries aren’t just about books. Even if you’ve never been a fan of reading, you can still have a relaxing and enjoyable time in air conditioning with the many multimedia resources available. From e-book and audio books to DVDs and other free programs, you’ll be surprised at just how much time you can spend at the library without feeling bored.

Suggestion: New York Public Library - Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

Location: 476 5th Ave, New York, NY 10018

Opening Hours: Do call (917) 275-6975 for more info

Go for a Wine Tasting Experience

Drinking wine isn’t an activity that’s just limited to your home or a restaurant. Since summer is almost upon us, you can always bring this activity to your local winery. There, you can sample more than just one to two bottles of wine. Some wineries also offer free wine tasting sessions on certain days, so if that idea has your ears perked up, you’ll want to start calling them and marking your calendar. With Harrison Car Service you can enjoy luxurious ground transportation to and from any local tour. Contact us to find out how we can accommodate your travel needs.

Suggestion: Brooklyn Winery

Location: 213 N 8th St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
